Item Description
These are from a series of tintypes picturing famous Americans c. 1860-61. They were produced by Abbott & Co. of NYC, although their name does not appear on the items. Each tintype is in a 1-3/8" x 1-5/8" lustrous brass shell frame. Clay retains the original loop which is missing, as typical, from the other four. Each has a reverse name label. First is "Henry Clay". Tan age on label and areas of emulsion loss from top right and left side backgrounds with a few dots off below. Image remains complete and crisp. Second has tape over name "Daniel Webster". Many tiny emulsion marks. Clear image. Third is "Charles Sumner". Exc. Fourth has tape over label "Maj. General Benj. F. Butler Of Massachusetts". Image on dark side but glossy and Exc. Last has surface paper off "Edward Everett". Image is Exc. and listed in Sullivan as EE 1860-1.
