Item Description
22x28" thick cardboard w/"Creative Signs" logo and "Designed By D. W. Beeghly" at bottom left. Poster advertises "In Person 2 Big Shows Janis Joplin And Big Brother And The Holding Company" and "Special Extra Added Attraction The Jeff Beck Group" on "Sun. Oct 20" at the "Alexandria Arena Roller Rink" in Alexandria, VA just outside of Washington D.C. Outstanding day-glo image of Joplin at left on this much celebrated design by artist Dail Beeghly. Bottom right and left corner bumps, age toning affecting the edges, two pin holes at top right and one at top left, two pieces of clear tape in the margin, ink inscription above the "S" in "Janis" and moderate handling wear most notably a well flattened crease at top left corner that does not affect the image of Joplin. Fine. All of the relatively few Beeghly designed concert posters were produced in extremely small quantities w/likely all produced being used in promotion. This extreme rarity combined w/impressive size and blazing color that reacts beautifully under black light make this piece perhaps the most outstanding Janis Joplin poster of the 1960s.

Within the collecting community Beeghly is among the most celebrated artist of the era despite producing relatively few concert posters. Working exclusively for promoter Durwood C. Settles, who promoted shows from Maryland to Atlanta, Beeghly stylized gig posters for James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and more. This poster is widely considered as one of the very best Janis Joplin/Big Brother posters produced during the 60s and given the bands home base in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood, where the psychedelic poster scene blossomed, it is a major testament to the talents of this East coast artist. Beeghly posters are rarely offered at auction. this is a wonderful opportunity to obtain a corner stone Joplin piece that you're unlikely to see again soon.
