Item Description
8.5x13" partially printed document issued to Ezekiel Knap on March 3, 1796. Third paragraph notes the conditions that would void the license including "...Suffer Or Permit Any Cock-fighting, Gaming, Or Playing With Cards Or Dice, Or Keep Any Billiard-Table, Or Other Gaming-Table, Or Shuffle-Board..." and signed boldly at conclusion by Richard Varick. Three horizontal holds w/less than .25" separation at top left along fold and light overall age toning. Fine. During the Revolutionary War Varick was appointed Captain of the 1st New York Regiment, served as an aide to General Benedict Arnold at West Point and after Arnold's defection to the British Varick served as private secretary to Gen. George Washington. He was appointed mayor of New York City serving from 1790-1801.
