Item Description
1-3/8" (34mm) listed in DeWitt as GW 1789-3 and in Albert as WI (Washington Inaugural) 12C. Albert calls this design "Eagle With Star" as above the eagle's head is a heraldic estoile of six points with a wavy line between each pair of points. Details on the eagle include a shield on the breast, an olive branch in the right claw and three arrows in the left. Albert lists six varieties of #12 with one of the distinctions being the number of punch marks forming the border which runs from a low of 37 to a high of 72. This is the variety with 63 punches which also show a bit on the reverse border. Reverse also has perfected formed shank. The silver flashing was so thin on these pieces that on the vast majority of examples it is totally gone. That makes this example with about 40% of the silver intact on the obverse quite the exception. The wing of the eagle on the left side has a bit of verdigris in the crevices of the deep die strike but that is a very minor condition factor. With the large amount of silvering still present, plus the intact shank, we judge this an Exc. specimen, especially in comparison to the vast majority of specimens with silvering totally absent.
