Item Description
The Great Baltimore Fire raged in Baltimore, MD Feb. 7-8, 1904, destroying much of central Baltimore, including over 1,500 buildings covering an area of some 140 acres. It is considered historically the third worst fire in an American city, surpassed only by the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906. Offered here is 1.75" dia. medal (w/hanger) containing 1.25" dia. medallion. Obverse of medallion features image of Baltimore's Battle Monument w/"City Of Baltimore - Incorporated 1797" text. Front of medal's edge has inscribed text reading "Italian Relief Committee For Fire Sufferers - Feb. 7-8-1904." This was likely given to firefighter who helped fight the fire in the then newly named "Little Italy." Some lt. aged patina, but o/w VF. Comes w/two 3.5x8.5" paper "Pass" slips issued to allow visitor to cross guard lines in the aftermath of the fire. Both are dated Feb. 10, 1904.
