Item Description
8x36.75" cotton linen banner in early thin wooden frame. Unlisted in Threads of History. This is the only example ever to surface and was photographed for the Summer 1999 APIC Keynoter "Collecting Lincoln" and featured on page 24. At center is an eagle, wings spread, clutching a bundle of arrows w/one of its talons and holding a banner in its beak reading "Liberty & Union!" The rendering is executed w/fine detail and the visual texture of the feathers and shaded edges of the arching banners give it a dimensional quality. The headline text "Lincoln & Hamlin" utilizes a stylized font that we have encountered on only one other 1860 Lincoln textile, a smaller horizontal variety having only Lincoln's name and lacking the dramatic eagle. On reverse of frame about 3" of textile is wrapped at edges of backing matte board. A tiny dot of white paint affecting the left breast of the eagle at center. Moderate age toning and light brown damp stain throughout that blends well and detracts minimally from the bold text and graphics. VG. Impressive in its current state, as it was found, this banner could be enhanced from the attention of a textile expert and professional framer. Early political campaign textiles have always been amongst the most coveted artifacts by the collecting community w/pre- civil war material from Abraham Lincoln's campaigns commanding the most impassioned pursuits. This unique campaign piece is a tremendous historical artifact from a pivotal election in the history of our great Republic that will provide its next caretaker pride of ownership for years to come.
