Item Description
2-1/8". Metal outer rim and back w/horizontal bar pin. The America First Committee movement, founded in 1940, had by 1941 found a vocal celebrity in aviator Charles Lindbergh. In 1941 Lindbergh speaking to a Des Moines, IA audience during a rally, espoused that Roosevelt's New Deal, the British and the Jewish people had prompted the war w/the Axis. These comments received wide spread condemnation by leading Republicans of the era including Thomas Dewey stating that Lindbergh's speech was "An Inexcusable Abuse Of The Right Of Freedom Of Speech". Hoover, a friend of Lindbergh, when asked to participate in an American First rally w/his friend refused. Illinois State Chairman of the Republican Party John F. Tyrell began using the slogan on this button around 1941. Button has faint toning below the word "Too" and moderate surface wear. Extremely Fine. A rare and historically significant button that is the first we've seen in our 51 years.
