Item Description
"Dondi" was a daily comic strip about a large-eyed war orphan of the same name. Created by Gus Edson and Irwin Hasen, it ran in more than 100 newspapers for three decades (Sept. 25, 1955 to June 8, 1986). Offered here is 15x32" wooden frame holds Hasen's pen and ink original art for Oct. 14, 1955 "Dondi" daily strip, published just two months after the strip began. Art features three panels, showing Dondi sitting on police precinct counter, wearing policeman's hat and eating ice cream as they try to figure out his name and where he came from. Dondi replies "I Coming Here Today On Big Boat." Last panel shows reporter showing up, expressing interest in Dondi's story. Last panel has Chicago Tribune copyright strip. Top right has custom cut into mat w/Hasen's name. Bottom has another cut w/Hasen's personal inscription "To My Good Friend And A Swell Guy" and adding his name and "2002" date. First panel has remnant of title paste-over (w/word balloon lines redrawn as they would appear w/o title) and Edson/Hasen name paste-over appears in last panel. Large hand-colored "Dondi" title appears above art at left and mat is composed of printed stat collage that has been partially colored in areas and nicely colored/detailed at left where large Dondi portrait is featured. Art is further enhanced by crafted custom mat created by artist Dan Makara, featuring cut out characters from 1950s "Dondi" newspaper strips at corners. Bottom center has painted wood "Dondi" name "plaque." Exc. display. Dan Makara Collection.
