Item Description
Alan Ramsay Hawley was one of the earliest aviators in America. In 1910 he won the national race with his balloon America II. He was the first passenger to fly in an airplane from NYC to Washington, DC in May, 1916. He was also president of the Aero Club Of America from 1913 to 1918. The first three items are medals personally used by or awarded to him. These pieces are 3" to 3.5" long. First item has propeller shaped hanger with a brass bar below "Arrangements" and medallion suspended showing very early airplane against a brass sunburst and green background  and lettering with text "International Aviation Tournament 1910." Reverse of this medal has his name inscribed in cursive writing "Alan R. Hawley" and above is "Tiffany & Co." Small spot of brass luster off the front bottom rim edge but still Exc. Second has hanger inscribed "Judge." Reverse of this reads "Tiffany & Co. Makers Bronze." Ribbon suspends medal with text "The Commercial Tercentenary Of New York 1916-1914." Reverse has panel  inscribed "Mr. Alan Hawley". Last medal has brass name badge with inked cardboard insert "A.R. Hawley". Ribbon suspends brass medal with raised image of "William Barton Rogers." Reverse of this reads "Massachusetts Institute Of Technology 1865-1916 Alumni Dedication Reunion  June 12, 13, 14, 1916." Last item in the group is a 4.5" ribbon with reverse vertical stickpin. Ribbon split across the center and reverse has horizontal piece of archival tape. Gold lettering reads "Guest Captain F.M. Hawks Coast To Coast Flight In Texaco 13". The split shows just a little and there is some loss of gold lettering but overall the piece still displays Fine. This ribbon relates to a famous flight August 12, 1930 when Frank Hawks flew from Los Angeles to Long Island in record breaking time. The medals are Exc. to Mint and unique.
