Item Description
13.25x19-5/8" frame contains handwritten letter in black ink on unlined paper. Letter has been professionally matted to 7.75x9.75" and is dated June 17, 1831. Letter was written in black ink by Francis Scott Key (1779-1843), an American lawyer, author and amateur poet who wrote the lyrics for a poem during the British bombardment of Baltimore's Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. The poem was first entitled "The Defense of Fort McHenry," eventually becoming the United States' national anthem - "The Star-Spangled Banner." Content of letter concerns an estate debt. Letter was folded as mailed, though fold lines are barely discernable. Bottom center has .25x1.75" area of discoloration w/two tiny holes along .5" long U-shaped tear. Fine overall but displays nicely as framed w/etched plaque noting this letter was written shortly before Key gave an oration about George Washington at the Capitol Rotunda on July 4, 1831. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
