Item Description
2.5" long in chocolate bronze with hanger inscribed "Massachusetts Minute Men 1861" suspending the medal which has the Massachusetts coat of arms on the obverse and extensive text on the back detailing its purpose and reading "The Commonwealth Of Massachusetts/To The Members Of The Massachusetts Volunteer Militia Who Were Mustered Into The United States Service In Response To President Lincoln's First Call For Troops April 15, 1861." These were the troops called to defend Washington and they were the same troops who were involved in a confrontation with a mob in Baltimore, which resulted in the death of Luther C. Ladd, a Massachusetts volunteer killed April 19, 1861 and considered the first victim of the war. These medals were authorized in 1902, long after many veterans had died, and although 3,805 were struck, by 1910 1,000 of those were still unclaimed. The recipient of this medal has his name inscribed in bold capital letters along the side edge as "Linus M. Caldwell, Corpl. A. 6th. Reg." Unique and essentially Mint. See next item #796.
