Item Description
2.25" dia/5.25" tall. Late 1930s. Metal top and cardboard barrel w/applied paper label. Additional text on label reads "Mass Defense Will Save Them!" and serial "No. 5742." Two areas of white paper residue from label that once sealed the metal top to the cardboard base. Overall Fine. The Scottsboro Boys were falsely accused of gang raping two white women and were embattled in the court system of Alabama fighting for their lives for almost two decades. The case is an important early domino in the civil rights movement and a glaring representation of the injustices African Americans faced. The ILD was the legal arm of the Communist party who became involved when the NAACP moved slowly fearing an impact to effectiveness in the face of the sensational charges.
