Item Description
3.25x5.5" postcard, issued as a premium by Lev Gleason Publications in 1944. Front of card features illustration of Golden Age characters Daredevil and Crimebuster and monkey Squeeks sits on his back, by Charles Biro (1911-1972). Biro had a 16-year run on the "Daredevil Comics" title for Lev Gleason Publications, the publisher of a number of popular comic books during the 1940s and early 1950s, including "Daredevil Comics, Crime Does Not Pay" and "Boy Comics" among others. While the name Daredevil now brings to mind the Marvel Comics character, this Daredevil was created by Jack Binder for a back-up feature in "Silver Streak" #6 in Sept. 1940. Front of card has handwritten recipient name in provided blank and notes "With Appreciation For Patriotic Service In The Paper Salvage Campaign To Win The War." Back has matching recipient name/address and bears June 5, 1944 New York postmark. Card is evenly aged and shows moderate handling wear, resulting in a number of creases. VG/Fine. A Golden Age premium rarity, this is the only known example of this extremely rare postcard, and is the actual photo example pictured in Ted Hake's "Official Price Guide To Pop Culture Memorabilia" book. This is the same item we offered in Auction #219, which has now been re-consigned by the winning bidder.
