Item Description
The "Superman" Sunday page first debuted Nov. 5, 1939. Offered is a 4-page 16.75x23.75" section of the March 4, 1940 edition of the "Des Moines Register" newspaper. Page 10 features full page retelling of Superman's origin, which differs from newspaper to newspaper and depending on when printed. Origin reprinted here features total of 28 panels, focusing more on the end days of Krypton and shows Superman's Kryptonian parents (then named Jor-L and Lara), showing Jor-L demonstrating two of Golden Age Superman's powers - speed and the ability to jump great distances. Baby Superman is seen in total of five panels, including being placed into rocket, which speeds away as Krypton explodes. Last four panels show the infant Superman's rescue on Earth and stupendous display of strength as an infant in an orphanage before second to last panel shows him as Superman, racing locomotive. Last panel is near full body image w/"Superman! Champion Of The Oppressed! The Physical Marvel Who Had Sworn To Devote His Existence To Helping Those In Need" text. McClure Newspaper Syndicate copyright in a couple panels. Top of page notes "Start This Comic Here Today" and goes on to explain Superman as "An Imaginary Man Who Popped Out Of An Imaginary Planet Less Than Two Years Ago, 'Superman' Today Is One Of The Most Popular Of All Comic Strip Characters" and goes on note that the "Superman" daily strip begins in the "Des Moines Register" in this day's issue w/"Now Turn To The Comic Page!" text at bottom (though this page is not included in this lot). Text also notes that the full color "Superman" Sunday page would follow the week after this debut. Great promotional text along right mentions some of Superman's powers and notes "Comic Magazines Which Feature His Activities Have Already Reached Over 1,000,000 Circulation Throughout The Nation." Newsprint is evenly aged w/some small tears/chips along margins, w/two .5" tears, but still clean and Fine/VF overall. Would look great framed. Early and historic. Franco Toscanini Collection
