Item Description
DeWitt-Sullivan SL1859-1 in white metal with near full luster except on the outer rim edges. 32mm (1.25"). Obverse center has his portrait and name while inscription around reads "Slavery The Sum Of All Villainies" accented by tiny stars and dots with additional text on the bottom edge "Marching Along." Reverse inscription around "Resistance To Tyranny Is Obedience To God 1859" with center depiction of a figure hanging from a scaffold plus the text "John Brown/Give Me/Liberty/Or Give Me/Death." Brown was hanged for his raid on the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry. While his attack shocked the nation, many Northerners came to view the militant abolitionist as a martyr. VF.
