Item Description
Beautifully constructed 2.75" tall three- section brass badge with "220 Hurdle Race" on center panel and medallion showing and reading "Souvenir L. E. Myers Oct. 17. 85 Testimonial". Reverse blank except for wreath design. This event, dubbed in contemporary newspapers as "one of the most interesting events in the history of sports in America" marked the retirement of Lawrence E. Myers who dominated the world of track and field from 1879-1885. He set world and American records at virtually every distance from 100 yards to one mile. His career began with the Manhattan Athletic Club in 1879, he competed and won against the best runners in Britain and he even raced and won on ice wearing short spikes against opponents on ice skates. This badge is from his "Special Night" at The Garden and his adoring public also presented him with $1,800.00. Mint. Rare.
