Item Description
Baranger Motion machines, or "Baranger Motions" were mechanically animated window displays for jewelry stores produced from 1925 to 1959 by the Baranger Company of South Pasadena, CA. Designed by Arch and Hazel Baranger as well as Robert Gerlach, these displays were manufactured in production runs limited to approx. 30 each, w/a total of 167 different designs produced. The displays were never sold, instead they were rented to jewelers on a monthly basis. These hand-made and highly detailed displays covered many themes, this one highlights a 19" long horse-drawn steam fire engine. Display consists of several different materials including cast aluminum horses, wheels and boiler w/wooden truck body and composition figures, all of which have been brightly painted. Fire/jewelry theme is promoted by small painted heart-shaped wooden plaque at top w/"Keep Her Heart Aflame With One Of Our Beautiful Diamonds" text. When plugged in and turned on motions include - horses move up/down, their articulated front legs move, fireman driver bends at waist, arm moves whip, head bobs, fireman at rear bends at waist and head bobs. Wheels are supposed to move as well, but o-ring style rubber belt that causes this action is slightly stretched, but could be easily replaced as motor area in back is accessed by removing metal cover. Whole display is mounted on 12x21" long wooden platform w/simulated cobblestone copper sheet "street." This display is from the collection/estate auction of Ward Kimball, one of Disney's "Nine Old Men" who was also a noted train and fire enthusiast and comes w/special illustrated auction tag. Display also comes w/original large shipping case w/company labels, which will not be used to ship the display, and will be sent separately for protection of both items.
