Item Description
1.5" w/ "Geraghty Mfg. Co. Chicago" back paper. Sketch portrait of candidates on cream background. Bryan is pictured at top center w/Edward T. Noonan, candidate for the 5th district US House race at bottom left and Gov. John P. Altgeld at right. All three candidates lost their elections. Noonan, then serving on the military staff of Gov. Altgeld, was seeking to represent Chicago's congressional district. Altgeld's refusal of Cleveland's offer of federal troops during the Pullman strike and his pardon of three Haymarket bombing conspirators had gained him a national reputation but having been born in Germany was ineligible to run for President. He was instrumental in breaking the party into Free Silver and Bourbon Democrats while opposing Cleveland's more conservative faction of the party. Republicans seized on Altgeld's birth status and pardons depicting Bryan as a willing puppet of the IL Gov. Light brown staining throughout and moderate surface wear in reflected light. VF. The majority of the portraits remain clean. No structural issues, perfect centering and full gloss. An exceptional Bryan and Illinois local that is the only example we have encountered in 51 years.
