Item Description
13-19/32x2211/32". Original first printing on glossy stock. Listed in Art Of Rock as plate 3.2. Art by Fillmore East artist David Byrd. Poster advertises the iconic Woodstock "An Aquarian Exposition" music festival in "Wallkill, New York August 15-16-17." This is the very first poster produced to advertise the event before the July venue change to Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, NY. The town of Wallkill, fearing a scene of chaos, quickly worked to pass an ordinance in early July that required events with more than 5,000 people in attendance to have a special permit and refused to grant one to festival promoters Michael Lang, Artie Kornfeld, Joel Rosenman, and John P. Roberts. This rejection proved to be a major publicity boost and despite the promoters pre-event estimate of 50,000 attendees the final event attracted in excess of 400,000 becoming a cultural touchstone. The festival featured iconic performances by a litany of the eras top musical acts including; The Who, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Joan Baez, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Band and Jimi Hendrix. Very faint surface indentations contained to the margins around perimeter and a bit of trivial corner wear at top right. Exc. An extremely well-preserved example w/fresh color and no restoration. An outstanding artifact of the 60s counter-culture peak that will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2019.
