Item Description
To protect the USA during WWII, the American Legion helped organize volunteers, starting May 1941, into the Aircraft Warning Service, the civilian arm of the Army's Ground Observer Corps. The east coast AWS was based at Mitchell Field in NY and on the west coast in Riverside, Ca. Many of the volunteers were women. First is 1.5" tall award pin with bars "For Merit" and "500 Hours". Reverse marked "Sterling". Next are three wings pins, 1.75" across,  first two name "Observer" one in PA and one in NJ with third pin reading "Auxiliary". Next three have threaded post back and last two are pins. In order "Chief Observer", "Asst. Chief Observer", "Observer", "Observer" different type face and a pin, and last "AWS/Army Air Forces".
