Item Description
27.25x40.75" poster for the original release of the 1940 Universal film directed by Christy Cabanne and starring Dick Foran, Peggy Moran, Wallace Ford, Cecil Kellaway, Eduardo Ciannelli, George Zucco and Tom Tyler. The second film in Universal's Mummy franchise, it was the first to feature the mummy Kharis, as played by Tom Tyler. This film led to an additional three films featuring Kharis - "The Mummy's Tomb, The Mummy's Ghost" and "The Mummy's Curse." Tyler only played Kharis in "The Mummy's Hand," w/Lon Chaney, Jr. taking over the role for the rest of the films. Poster had scattered tears and paper loss along fold lines w/moderate paper loss at bottom fold crease intersection. Some paper loss at top fold crease intersection and just below it, though almost no paper loss to the Mummy's head or body. There were some pen marks/writing on back to lower left that slightly bled through onto Moran's face and green bkg. beside it. Overall, the poster was in Fair to Good condition prior to linen-mounting. An expert restorer mounted and restored the poster, including complete restoration and filling in of margins, as well as professional airbrushing to lower left and restoration to Wallace Ford's face. Additional restoration was carried out to cast name in areas below "Hand" in the film title, around Kharis's hand on Moran's dress and face and vertical line leading from point of her upturned chin. While you can see signs of the restoration under black light, it displays wonderfully from any reasonable viewing distance. As fold and border issues have been professionally restored, poster now displays Exc. Unlike other Golden Age Universal Monsters films, "The Mummy's Hand" was not re-released by Realart, making this the only vintage poster release for this film. As such, this desirable poster rarely comes up for sale, this the first example we've offered in our 51 years.
