Item Description
2" dia. cello w/6.75" long ribbon. Unlisted in Hake. This badge has sometimes been considered a 1948 convention item, and while that could be the case our research indicates it was likely produced around the 46th Convention of the National Association Of Postmasters Of The United States held in St. Louis, Missouri on Oct. 23-26, 1950. Postmaster General Jesse M. Donaldson was a featured speaker during the event and, given his Missouri roots, was likely in attendance at the Missouri Postmasters State Convention on Oct. 21. Less than five examples of this handsome badge are known to us- given the extreme rarity it is likely these were distributed in limited quantities to Missouri Postmasters in attendance at the State Convention for use in the following days. Donaldson began his postal career in 1908 and when fellow Missourian Truman elevated him to the cabinet level position of Postmaster General in 1947 he became the first letter carrier to rise to the top postal position. An ardent political ally of Truman, Donaldson served through 1952. Light age toning and trivial wrinkling to the ribbon that is attached under spring pin. The superlative quality button has only trivial surface wear and remains NM displaying Mint. Historically significant and among the rarest of all Truman buttons.
