Item Description
2.25". Mirror has trivial silvering loss, cello side is essentially Mint. Profile of Judge Julius Hoffman by Jules Feiffer. Hoffman presided over the trial involving charges against protesters arrested during the 1968 Democratic Convention. Originally the "Chicago 8", Hoffman refused to allow defendant Bobby Seale to represent himself prompting conflicts that led Hoffman to order Seale gagged and shackled and eventually jailed for contempt reducing the defendants to 7. Defendants Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin and others often insulted Hoffman but all 7 were found not guilty of conspiracy with 5 of them found guilty of inciting a riot. Hoffman imposed the maximum penalty on those 5 although by 1972 all of Hoffman's contempt citations and all of the substantive convictions were reversed on numerous grounds. The Appeals Court found Judge Hoffman had exhibited a "Deprecatory And Often Antagonistic Attitude Toward The Defense." Feiffer, famous for his Village Voice cartoons, often contributed artwork to political causes during the late 1960s and 1970s.
