Item Description
16x21.25" document framed to 26x31.75". Payroll sheet dated March 1851 and signed at lower right "R. E. Lee B.V. Col."  Lee, then U.S. Army Engineers Brevet-Colonel, was responsible for designing the fort located in Baltimore, MD as part of the War Department's efforts to strengthen coastal defense. From 1848 until 1852 Lee supervised the project and lived in Baltimore until he accepted the Superintendent position at West Point Military Academy. Six vertical and one horizontal folds. Tiny separations at junctions and a less than .25" tear at left center along fold. Otherwise only moderate age toning and handling wear. Fine. A rare and important document that captures Lee during his rise as one of America's most important military thinkers. Comes w/JSA LOA and Hake's COA.
