Item Description
Joe Higgins, aka The Shield, was one of the most popular comic book heroes of the 1940s, fighting to protect the American way of life in a patriotic costume that made him invulnerable. In fact, The Shield was the first hero to wear such a costume, introduced in "Pep Comics" #1 in 1940, pre-dating Captain America by over a year. The Shield also appeared in "Shield-Wizard Comics" between 1940 and 1944 and the character's popularity gave rise to The Shield G-Man Club. This lot consists of original mailing envelope w/"M.L.J. Magazines" return address and typed recipient address containing 2x3.5" stiff membership card w/typed member's name (matching that on envelope) and actual ink-signed name of The Shield comic book character's secret identity Joe Higgins as issued. Card is NM and rare in this condition. Envelope shows scattered wear from mailing but is complete and Fine overall. Envelope is very rare. 1.25" dia. button is smaller size variant (see larger size, following item #1856) issued by "Pep Comics" in 1943, featuring classic image of The Shield bending metal beam w/"Shield G-Man Club" name at top. Front has some lt. surface wear that is only noticeable upon magnification and back has some luster wear. Still bright, glossy and Exc. appearance. .75x1-1/8" celluloid badge, features same Shield image as button and is NM.
