Item Description
16.25x26" glazed cotton. Unlisted in Threads Of History. Additional text "For Vice President, Hannibal Hamlin." Each line of text executed using the same blue ink found in the field of the canton indicating that the two were printed at the same time. Unusual top right placement of the canton which features 35 stars. The smaller stars loosely form a spiral pattern ending at the large center star and having one or two stars in each corner. When the flag is turned 90 degrees clockwise the star arrangement has a double heart medallion pattern. In 1860 there were 33 states making this an anticipatory flag likely produced w/the thought that Western territories Kansas and Nebraska would soon join the Union. Kansas was finally admitted in Jan. of 1861 and Nebraska was not admitted until after the Civil War in 1867, aptly naming their capitol Lincoln in the 16th Presidents honor. Edge chipping, most notably an area affecting the lower right of the canton and one affecting the extreme edge of the fourth stripe from top; scattered spots of light brown stain, most notably one affecting the "A" in "Abram", handling wear and moderate even age toning. Fine. A remarkable survivor considering the untold travels during its over 150 years of existence. Impressive size and infused w/historical importance, this flag will frame beautifully. Political campaign flags are the most sought-after artifacts by collectors of political campaign items w/even the most advanced collectors often spending a lifetime in pursuit of a single example. After descending through a Connecticut family this flag has been in private hands for over 50 years. Its appearance here marks the first time it has been offered publicly.
