Item Description
2-1/8" dia. celluloid-covered pocket mirror featuring portrait of Frank "Home Run" Baker (1886-1963), who played MLB from 1908 to 1922, for the Philadelphia Athletics and the New York Yankees. Baker's heroics in the 1911 World Series, in which he hit two crucial home runs to help lead the Athletics to a six-game victory over the Giants, earned him his "Home Run" Baker nickname. Baker was elected to the Baseball HOF in 1955. Baker is depicted in Athletics uniform w/"Frank Baker - Philadelphia Athletics - Hero 1911 World Series" text. Manufactured by the Keystone Badge Company of Reading, PA as noted on curl. Typical trace of reverse silvering wear, mostly at edges. Front has scattered but lt. age spotting (including on face) but all remains totally bright and glossy. Minor surface wear, visible only in reflected light. Celluloid is free of cracks. Fine overall. Baseball pocket mirrors are much rarer than pinbacks from this era, especially those picturing an individual player. This is an outstanding example and one of the most desirable of all celluloid souvenirs dating from baseball's dead-ball era.
