Item Description
George Wilson Booth was a Maryland soldier who fought on the side of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, serving four years in the Army of Virginia. Booth was present at both Manassas battles and in smaller battles from the Peninsula to the Valley, serving w/Stonewall Jackson, "Grumble" Jones, Dick Ewell, Jubal Early and John Imboden. Wounded at Greenland Gap, he arrived late at Gettysburg - much to his good fortune. Promoted to captain, Booth served in the Valley during the final days and was present at the burning of Chambersburg. Offered here is a lot of his personal effects. 6-3/8x9-3/8" leatherbound copy of Booth's book "Personal Reminiscences Of A Maryland Soldier In The War Between The States - 1861-1865," which has been personally inscribed in black ink to his wife on front endpapers, writing "To My Dear Wife - These Pages Are Affectionately Inscribed, G.W. Booth - Sept. 20, 1898." Book features gilt lettering on cover and saw very limited printing by Fleet, McGinley & Co. of Baltimore, MD in 1898. Spine shows lt. wear but book is o/w Exc. 2" dia. 14k gold luster case J. S. MacDonald pocketwatch bears "GWB" monogram w/engraved "G.W. Booth" name inside lid. Scattered lt. wear to case w/some faint spots of staining to watch face. Watch winds and runs. VF. Watch comes w/Booth's personal enameled gold watch fob on 13.5" gold-plated chain. Fob features enameled Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, w/the stars being inset diamond chips, two of which are missing. Back of fob has engraved "GWB" monogram, "1861-5" years and CSA's "Deo Vindice" national motto. Aside from missing chips, fob is o/w Exc. 1.5x2.75" sterling matchsafe also bears engraved "GWB" monogram and shows moderate wear/aging w/obvious denting. VG. Interesting lot from a published Civil War soldier.
