19.5x26.75" thin newsprint broadside urges recruitment in the Veteran Reserve Corps, a military reserve organization created within the Union Army during the Civil War to allow partially disabled or o/w infirm soldiers/former soldiers to perform light duty. Broadside in marked "Elmira, N.Y. June 17, 1863" at lower left and top features bold "Men Wanted! For The Invalid Corps" w/patriotic eagle image at top, which holds a banner in his beak reading "The Union Forever!" Further text reads "Only Those Faithful Soldiers Who, From Wounds Or The Hardships Of War, Are no Longer Fit For Active Field Duty Will Be Received In This Corps Of Honor - Enlistments Will Be For Three Years Unless Sooner Discharged." Text goes on to list requirements and terms of service as well as providing name of official to report desire to enlist - Captain and Provost Marshal of the 27th District, State of New York, Samuel M. Harmon. Broadside is evenly aged and shows obvious wear and tear, an all but inevitable fate given a broadside of this size and age. Several folds have scattered splits/tears/pulls and noticeable edge chipping w/2" tear and large piece missing at top center. Top of broadside has been mounted to board an could easily be framed for display. Good/VG. Rare.
