Item Description
5x6.75" original silver gelatin photograph shows team in uniform in front of a dugout. The true highlight of the photo is Torriente who is shown full figure standing at the far left. Other players include: Rafael Almeida (standing next to and conversing with Torriente), Bernardo Baro, Pelayo Chacon, Ramon Herrera, Merito Acosta, Adolfo Luque, Emilio Palmero, Armando Marsans, Bartolo Portuondo, Eufemio Abreu and Isido Fabre. Photo has a pair of heavy creases that run horizontally across the entire photo 1.5" from the top and bottom. Reverse has clear tape reinforcements of these creases. Other all over scattered creases and handling wear, corner tip wear w/tape repairs on reverse. However image remains strong and distinct. Good. Torriente began playing professionally with the Cuban Stars of the Negro League in 1913, and led the Chicago American Giants to Negro National League pennants between 1920 and 1922. He holds the Cuban League record batting average of .352 and hit as high as .402 with Almendares. Inducted into the National Baseball HOF in 2006. Very few images of Torriente exist (with this being his earliest known team photo appearance) and for this reason he is among the most sought after and difficult to find of any HOF member.
