Item Description
1.5". c. 1964. This group was rooted in armed self defense and was comprised of African American WWII veterans. Founded by Earnest 'Chilly Willy' Thomas and Frederick Douglass Kirkpatrick to protect civil rights workers in the deep South who were often unsupported by state and federal authorities. The Deacons provided security during the James Meredith March Against Fear after Stokely Carmichael urged organizers to relax their commitment to non-violence to prevent scenes similar to the chaotic mob violence that occurred during the Freedom Rides.
