Item Description
This is an early (1897 while Police Commissioner) stiff cardboard calling card with printed text "Mr. Theodore Roosevelt/Sagamore Hill". The card is 1-5/8" x 3.25" with a few small, faint, paperclip marks, two small holes far left from a pin and a full vertical, but light, crease 1" in from the right edge. All defects have minimal visual impact. Fine. Roosevelt's note in steel tip pen with very bold black ink reads: "Dear Cabot, This is to introduce to you my, and my father's, warm friend Mr. W.E. Dodge; I most earnestly commend him to your courtesy. T.R." Roosevelt items signed as "T.R." are few and far between and rare.  Dodge was an important member of NYC society and worked with TR Senior on the Allotment Commission during the Civil War. While the calling card is undated, we will include a photocopy title page and entry from the Scribner's Sons 1925 book titled:  Selections From The Correspondence Of Theodore Roosevelt And Henry Cabot Lodge 1884-1918. The entry is a Jan. 27, 1897 short letter from TR with NYC Police Department address  to "Dear Cabot" and he writes in part ... Mr. and Mrs. William E. Dodge coming back from Washington highly enthusiastic about you...".  This entry seems directly related to the TR message on his calling card to introduce Dodge to Lodge probably written a few days or weeks earlier. Lot also includes vintage cabinet photo by Rice /1217-1219 & 1225 Penna. Ave. Washington D.C. of Lodge. We've not deciphered the name of the man Lodge wrote as the ink on the photo paper partially faded, but Lodge's blue ink inscription on the card mount is bold and reads; "The Best Wishes & Compliments Of Henry Cabot Lodge". Photo is 5-1/8 x 7-1/4" with light dust soil traces and small  paper loss from bottom corners. Fine. Both the "T.R." rare calling card and the Lodge signed photo come with Hake's COA and JSA LOAs.
