Item Description
This is an exceptionally early (1897) baseball player button made a year before the 1898 Cameo Pepsin Gum series (about 105 different) which is similar in appearance. This button for Jack Warner is unlisted in Hake/Steckler, unlisted in Muchinsky and we've not found any auction records for it. The button is 1.25" with a Whitehead & Hoag back paper introduced December, 1896 and used during 1897. The back paper outer edge is covered under the edges of the crimped paper/cello within the channel formed by the collet so the back paper is indisputably original to this button. The front is a real photo, without dot screen, of "Warner/Catcher, N.Y." Contrast is light as occurs so often to many of the Cameo buttons from 1898. All details remain easily seen. Cello surface is a hair pushed in but just a bit noticeable to the touch. Visually there is a near microscopic pinpoint nick barely seen on his left shoulder and a pinpoint black dot as made by the "W" of his name. Surface has superb high gloss and a near total absence of surface scratches. Exc. and displays at least NM. Warner's major league career was with NY Giants 1896-1901, Boston Americans 1902, NY Giants 1903-04, St. Louis Cardinals 1905, Detroit Tigers 1905-06, Washington Senators 1906-08. Among only two or three other baseball player pin-backs that can be positively dated to 1897, one year after the pin-back button's introduction to the world.
