Item Description
18x22" Bainbridge board features mixed media original art by Bob Clarke (1926-2013), an American illustrator best-known for his work w/"MAD." Art was published in "MAD Special" #4 as a "MAD Mini-Poster," ©1971. Art depicts Smokey the Bear as a counterculture revolutionary, a lit match in one hand, a raised Molotov cocktail in the other. Smokey wears rose-tinted glasses, a raised fist medallion and sports a beret w/a red panther on it, an obvious nod to the Black Panthers. Image was printed in full color section of the magazine, w/bold "Burn, Baby, Burn!" text at top, a reference to Charlie Watt's poem of the same name and a stark contrast to Smokey's trademark "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires" slogan. Clarke has signed at bottom right. Image area measures 13x16.75". Margins show some scattered aging/staining w/aged printer labels at edges (two of which have loosened and fallen off). Art remains bright, clean and would display Exc. if matted and framed. Comes w/reading copy of the issue this art was published for.
