Item Description
11.5x17.5" artboard has Dave Cockrum's original art that has been inked by Sam Grainger for title splash page for "X-Men" Vol. 1 #95, published by Marvel Comics Oct. 1975. This issue is notable as it features just the third appearance of the New X-Men (Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Banshee and Thunderbird), led by Cyclops. This issue also featured the death of Thunderbird. Issue opens w/the imminent danger facing the X-Men after Count Nefaria's attack at the climax of the previous issue destroyed their ship, leaving all seven mutants plummeting towards the Rocky Mountains. Top of art has large hand-lettered "Warhunt!" story title, which was altered for publication, specifically the last letter. Top margin was also slightly altered, as Grainger's name was added prior to publication. Page features dynamic image from Chris Claremont and Cockrum's classic run. Top margin has inked title and issue number w/penciled page number and Grainger's name added. Bottom left has been signed by Cockrum (1943-2006) in blue ink and is inscribed "Best Wishes To George." Back of artboard has Marvel Comics copyright inkstamp. Some scattered white correctional fluid touch-ups to story title. Artboard is evenly aged and has very slight trim along left margin, not distracting. Tiny edge nick to right margin, 5.75" from top. Some lt. scattered dust soiling and a small spot of staining beside Wolverine, but art otherwise remains clean and VF overall. This art represents a rare chance to obtain a historic page of original art from one of the most important Bronze Age "X-Men" issues.
