Item Description
16-7/8x21-7/8" on thin cardboard. Poster advertises a concert at Painters Mill Music Fair on Nov. 8 presented by "Tree Frog Productions." Graphic of an elegant gathering of frogs w/one in top hat arriving in a classy vehicle, complete w/tree hood ornament, in foreground. This concert was part of John's first American tour. A 1" vertical tear at top center, repaired on reverse w/clear tape, a 1.5" dia. stain in the left margin that just touches the border of the design and two faint horizontal creases at lower third that do not break the surface paper. Otherwise two surface paper lifts on reverse from tape and moderate handling wear. VG. John idolized Russell and this concert occurred less than a month before the widely bootlegged gigs at the Fillmore in San Francisco. An important and rare poster that ties together the two legendary piano men at the early stages of the solo careers.
The Baltimore suburb of Owings Mills, MD at the dawn of the 1970s saw a rag-tag group of hippies, under the moniker Tree Frog Productions, take a trust fund and turn it into a 16 month party promoting concerts at Painter's Mill Music Fair. The venue was constructed for theatrical plays featuring a revolving stage for productions in the round. "It was kind of the area's version of what was happening at the Fillmore in San Francisco" says Ron Nix, a regular attendee and collector who had the foresight to preserve a selection of posters produced for advertising the infamous concert series. Tree Frog Productions started the series with a show headlining Leon Russell and a relatively unknown British piano man, Elton John, as the opening act. "I was there to support my friend's venture and was a fan of Russell, I didn't know Elton's music" says Nix adding "The show was only about half sold but everyone was treated to an unforgettable night, Russell was brilliant and Elton had everyone dancing."
