Item Description
AFA graded and encapsulated 3.75" tall fully painted engineering pilot with country-of-origin and copyright stamps, representing the final phase of development for this infamous 1979 Boba Fett prototype action figure. Originally 80-100 examples of this prototype were shipped to Kenner from Hong Kong for safety testing purposes; which resulted in only "non-firing" examples with sonically welded missiles being released to the public. Approximately 24-26 examples of this J-Slot variety are known to have survived, with several existing in rather rough condition, having been subjected to a variety of safety testing procedures that included but were not limited to heating, freezing, and other destructive trials and tribulations. Due to the exceptional condition of the example offered here - AFA-graded 85+ NM+ - this J-Slot was clearly spared these harsh conditions. The only evidence that this prototype was used for testing evaluation is the typical indexing marks placed on the underside of figure's feet.
Prototype makes for attractive exhibit within an AFA Archival case, utilizing AFA's updated laser cut casing style, which displays the prototype figure and rocket separately; J-slot rocket-firing mechanism is clearly visible from the back of case (spring clearly visible). AFA serial number 11091003.
In addition to the historic nature of this prototype, it is also worth noting that this is the photo example seen in both "Tomart's Price Guide to Worldwide Star Wars Collectibles" (Second Edition, Limited Hardcover only) by Stephen J. Sansweet and T.N. Tumbusch and "Star Wars Vintage Action Figures: A Guide For Collectors" by John Kellerman. With the Tumbusch provenance, this is very likely one of the first three J-Slot prototypes to be discovered in the mid-1990s. Prior to that discovery, the J-Slot variation was completely unknown to the hobby.
Comes encapsulated with Collectible Investment Brokerage (CIB) COA as well as Letter of Provenance from noted Star Wars expert Brian Rachfal and LOAs from Kenner Reliability & Safety Technician John R. Howison (from whom the figure originally came from) and Tomart Publications (signed by Tom Tumbusch). Extremely rare and historic "Star Wars" artifact and the quintessential Boba Fett piece.
