Item Description
16x20" thin cardboard poster advertises Nov. 8, 1971 concert at Painters Mill Music Fair presented by "Tree Frog Productions" that featured Leon Russell and Elton John. Art features gathering of frogs in evening attire, standing in front of theater as top hat-wearing frog arrives in elegant convertible (which has tree hood ornament; a nod to Tree Frog Productions). Concert was part of Elton John's first American tour. This is an original printing of the very first poster, before it was altered to show Elton John's name in larger text, reducing the size of Leon Russell's name so that both artists' names were the same size.

The Baltimore suburb of Owings Mills, MD saw a rag-tag group of hippies (under the moniker Tree Frog Productions) create a 16-month party promoting concerts at Painter's Mill Music Fair. The venue was constructed for theatrical plays and featured a revolving stage for productions in the round. "It was kind of the area's version of what was happening at the Fillmore in San Francisco" says Ron Nix, a regular attendee and collector who had the foresight to preserve a selection of posters produced for advertising the famed concert series. Tree Frog Productions started the series w/the concert this poster advertises, headlining Leon Russell w/a then relatively unknown Elton John as the opening act. "I was there to support my friend's venture and was a fan of Russell, I didn't know Elton's music" says Nix, adding "The show was only about half sold but everyone was treated to an unforgettable night, Russell was brilliant and Elton had everyone dancing."

Poster has scattered aging and top and lower left corners have strips of tape staining. Pin holes at corners w/some scattered margin/corner tip wear. Staple holes at bottom center. Back has spots of surface paper lift (not affecting front's display) at top corners as well as top/bottom center. Poster is VG overall. Important and rare poster that ties together two legendary piano men at the early stages of their solo careers.
