Item Description
3-5/8" tall by 3-5/8" long solid cast metal ornament w/chrome luster. Hood ornament depicts Bernice The Whiffle Hen who was introduced by Popeye creator E.C. Segar in his strip "Thimble Theatre" prior to Popeye's introduction. The Whiffle Hen was a lucky creature and was impossible to kill, later saving Popeye's life. c. late 1920s-early 1930s. Great pose of Bernice w/her wings in the air. Base has horseshoe, related to the Whiffle Hen's lucky properties. Trace of age toning to base and at feet of Whiffle Hen, tiny typical pitting but retains near full luster which remains bright and shiny. VF. Rare and one of only two examples we have offered in our 52 years (including this same one that we first offered back in 2010); those examples selling for $1,150 and $3,061.
