Item Description
Alone or accompanied by the hymn singing women, Carrie Nation acted on what she considered her divine ordination to aid the temperance movement by destroying saloons. Between 1900-1910 she was arrested 30 times for what she called "hatchetations". She paid jail fines with proceeds from lectures and the sale of souvenir hatchet pins (see next item). She also published a biweekly newsletter called The Smasher's Mail and a newspaper called The Hatchet. Here are two replicas of her weapon of choice. First is a 9-5/8" long, fully 3-D, all steel hatchet with raised letters on one side of the gold painted handle "Carrie Nations" (hatchet). Blade has some brown marks and small paint loss from the handle. Fine. Second 10" long is a uniface cast aluminum hatchet with two small cast loops for display on the handle's upper edge plus big raised lettering "Nation's Joint Smasher". A small .25x.75" piece off the lower right corner of the blade with rest Exc. This design is Rare.
