Item Description
4.25x7". One sheet, front and back, autographed letter signed to former Virginia Senator William S. Archer addressing his support for the "I Have Decided To Write Nothing To The Convention Or To Any Individual Member, Before A Nomination, But Should That Honour Fall To My Lot, I Shall, In My Acceptance, Give My Views, On The Compromise Measures, In Terms At Least As Strong, In Their Favour, As Those I Read To You Two Days Since." Boldly signed at conclusion "Winfield Scott" in black ink. Two horizontal mailing folds and a less than .25" margin tear at bottom right not affecting text. VF. Scott's support of the compromise, addressing in part the status of slavery in the territories obtained in the Mexican-American War, pushed away Southern Whigs and helped clear a path for Franklin Pierce to win the election handily. Comes w/Hake's COA & JSA LOA.
