Item Description
18x24.25" on cardboard w/"E. J. Warner Poster Corp." at bottom center. Headline at top "To Aide/ Southern States Sit-In Movement/ Martin Luther King Defense" and advertising event "Tues. May 17" and the "369th Armory" in NYC. The five featured stars are pictured and include "Harry Belafonte," "Mahalia Jackson," "Sidney Poitier," "Shelley Winters" and "Diahann Carroll." Also featured was a "Freedom Drama" by co-writers including Lorrane Hansbury "Author Of 'Raisin In The Sun'". King was arrested by Alabama officials on two counts of felony perjury for signing fraudulent tax returns for 1956 and 1958. In response Belafonte and a group of supporters formed this group which ran an ad in the New York Times taking the position that the arrest was an effort "To Destroy The One Man Who, More Than Any Other, Symbolizes The New Spirit Now Sweeping The South." Scattered staple holes, light wrinkling and moderate corner wear. Fine. The finest example of the four we have encountered. A rare and historic poster featuring many of the eras most notable pop culture and movement figures.
