Item Description
The Shield, was one of the most popular comic book heroes of the 1940s, fighting to protect the American way of life in a patriotic costume that made him invulnerable. In fact, The Shield was the first hero to wear such a costume, introduced in "Pep Comics" #1 in 1940, pre-dating Captain America by over a year. The Shield also appeared in "Shield-Wizard Comics" between 1940 and 1944 and the character's popularity gave rise to The Shield G-Man Club. Offered here is a lot of three items from the 1940 comic book club membership kit sponsored by "Pep Comics." 1.75" dia. club button features classic image of The Shield bending steel beam. This is the first issue button, c. 1940. No backpaper as issued. Much scarcer than the 1.25" size version. Super glossy, high grade example. NM and the nicest we've ever seen. 2x3.5" stiff membership card has typed member's name and actual ink-signed name of The Shield's alter ego (Joe Higgins) as issued. Card has lt. even aging, but is o/w Exc. 3x4.5" mailer envelope w/M.L.J. Magazine return address and typed recipient address (w/different name than that on card) and shows some scattered handling wear w/creases and small spot of staining. Fine overall. A must have for the comic book club collector.
