Item Description
Clarence Matthew Baker (1921-1959) was a comic book artist/illustrator best known for drawing early comics heroines like the costumed crimefighter Phantom Lady (where he gained a reputation as one of the best "Good Girl" comic artists of the Golden Age) as well as Romance comics. Baker is the first known African-American artist to find success in the comic-book industry, creating the first known black hero in American comics - Voodah, who debuted in "Crown Comics" #3 in 1945. Baker worked for Fiction House, Fox Comics, Quality Comics and St. John Publications, where he provided the art for the very first graphic novel, the digest-sized "It Rhymes With Lust" in 1950. Baker was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2009. Offered here is a 1.25" dia. button featuring Baker's art for an atomic bomb-inspired character, Ato McBomb, who was featured in a Baker illustrated storybook that apparently never saw publication. The art seen on this button was featured on a "Telepic Book Of Cartoons" proof. Button does not feature a maker's name, 1940s. Bright, glossy and Exc. Rare.
