Item Description
4-1/2x7-1/8" first printing on glossy stock. Poster of same design is listed in the Art Of Rock as plate 3.2. Art by Fillmore East artist David Byrd. Handbill promotes the iconic Woodstock as "An Aquarian Exposition" music festival in "Wallkill, New York August 15-16-17." This is the very first design produced to advertise the event before the July venue change to Max Yasgur's dairy farm in Bethel, NY. The town of Wallkill, fearing a scene of chaos, quickly worked to pass an ordinance in early July that required events w/more than 5,000 people in attendance to have a special permit and refused to grant one to festival promoters. This rejection proved to be a major publicity boost helping the event smash pre-event estimates of 50,000 attendees when over 400,000 arrived. Iconic performances by a litany of the eras top musical acts including - The Who, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Joan Baez, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Band and Jimi Hendrix helped secure the events legacy as a cultural touchstone. Almost no handling wear on this extremely well-preserved example w/fresh color and no restoration. Essentially Mint. An outstanding artifact of the peak of the 1960s counterculture.
