Item Description
Large and impressive 14" tall hand-painted wood, Masonite and metal Linemar/Marx prototype/sample of proposed battery-operated toy, referred to in included paperwork as "B/O Bubbling Dragon." 1965. Metal mouth section was designed to hold bubble solution. Lowering dragon's single arm would raise the bubble tube and activate internal motor-driven fan to blow air through bubble tube, producing bubbles. Hole in back as made to allow fan to draw in air. As designed now the prototype would have to have one side removed (unscrewed)  to provide access to motor and battery compartment. Original batteries have been removed to prevent any future leakage. Prototype shows some scattered aging/wear w/2-3/8" putty repair along tail seam. Fine overall and toy presents a wonderful folk art appearance. The two sheets of paperwork that accompanies the prototype are on "Linemar Of Nippon Ltd." (the Japanese branch of Linemar) letterhead dated Nov. 26, 1965 and concerns sending the sample to Marx in Erie, PA, attention Raymond J. Lohr, who worked for Marx for 37 years and retired as Chief Designer in 1972. Paperwork has been folded as mailed and are evenly aged. One has some scattered staining and is VG while other is VF. Paperwork provides nice provenance for this unique prototype. This unique prototype/sample of a toy that was ultimately never produced would be a great focal point of any battery toy or Marx collection.
