Item Description
Handmade 17.5x27x18.5" tall automaton w/heavy wood frame. Platform, compartments doors and removable decorative side panels are painted Masonite, other parts are mostly tin and wood. The five heads/figures are carved and painted wood. The three infamous Axis leaders have black cloth bodies, Uncle Sam and Miss Liberty are fully dressed in cloth outfits. Electric motor on underside runs complex mechanisms. 1940s. Automaton has been recently examined/adjusted by professional antique machine expert and has new cord w/built-in switch. Actions are as follows (a video of automaton in action is available, check this item's online listing for link) - covers in platform open in sequence as heads of Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo appear in sequence as Uncle Sam raises/lowers rod w/whip end. He is meant to motion towards each head causing it to lower and close, however action is a bit behind and all three heads have lowered by the time he gets to Tojo. At this point, doors of compartment open and a light comes on, illuminating inside and top w/patriotic "V" ribbon. Miss Liberty figure waves arms, w/one holding flag. Doors close and actions are repeated. Bottom is open so all wires/motor and cams/wheels, etc. can be accessed. One of side panels section has been glued at a break, Uncle Sam's jacket has a bit of fraying, anti-Axis figures' "clothing" has lt. dust soiling. Rest of unit shows lt. wear. Fine overall. This amusing and fascinating automaton is truly unique and could certainly become the focal point of any World War II collection. Due to size and delicate nature of the mechanism, we recommend pick-up or shipment by specialty shipper, please contact us w/any shipping inquires prior to the end of the auction.
