Item Description
20.5x27.5" artboard has been matted and has oversized 15x22" artboard mounted at center, featuring pen and ink original art for August 2, 1992 "Outland" Sunday page. Art is by Guy Berkeley "Berke" Breathed, a cartoonist best known for his comic strips "Opus" and "Bloom County," of which "Outland" was a Sunday-only spin-off (1989-1995), featuring many of the same characters. Breathed won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1987 for his work on "Bloom County." Left margin has title, "Washington Post" and date labels as well as printer registrations marks. Art features "Another Episode Of The Secret Life Of 'Bachelor Tycoon'," a not so veiled caricature of Microsoft's Bill Gates. Sunday page features nine panels, included topper panel that spans entire top of artboard. Art has been entirely hand-colored w/mixed media, w/left third of topper being printed stat w/rest being all original art. The titular "Bachelor Tycoon" is featured in first regular panel standing in front of home computer, wearing "Microsquish, Inc." shirt w/small notation making reference to Seattle, WA, home of Gates. Story deals w/whether or not being rich helps the character in getting a date. He approaches young woman reading on low wall. He lifts his shirt, promising to let her peek at his "Microchip Tattoo." After she ignores him, he offers to purchase Norway for her to sweeten the deal. This causes her to finally look up, saying "Okay, But No Kissing" much to his obvious delight. Last panel features teaser for the character's next adventure, in which Bachelor Tycoon contemplates if purchasing Wal-Mart would prevent a woman from calling him 'Potato Butt'. Fifth panel features pasted stat of young woman that has been hand-colored while in sixth panel she is mostly hand-colored stat w/original art hair. Her body is pasted stat in next panel, w/original art head that looks at most hand-colored stat of Bachelor Tycoon, whose mouth is original art. Breathed has signed in third panel, which also bear handwritten date. Main artboard has some corner tip and scattered margin wear but art remains clean and Exc. All published original art by Breathed is rare, especially these "Outland" Sunday pages, which almost never come up for sale.
