Item Description
3.25x4" cardboard mount stamped "London After Midnight" (and marked "Excelsior Illustrating Co." of New York, NY.) holds original release glass slide for the 1927 silent mystery/horror film directed and co-produced by Tod Browning and starring Lon Chaney. Distributed by MGM, the last copy of the film known to exist was destroyed in the 1965 MGM vault fire, making "London After Midnight" one of the most famous and eagerly sought after of all lost films. Title slide features large image of Chaney (sans make-up) peeking around title card, his name larger than that of the film. Lower right has image of Chaney in his iconic "Man In The Beaver Hat" (an eerie vampire-like persona) make-up, looming over co-stars Marceline Day and Edna Tichenor. Cardboard mount has streak of moisture staining along bottom of slide and along right. Fine overall while slide remains Exc. Very rare as is all promotional material for this storied lost film.
