Item Description
14.25x20.5" Additional headline "The Last Republican Card Effectually Trumped!" Republicans attempted to paint Tilden and the Democratic party as sympathetic to the Confederate cause in the post Civil-War era. Here Tilden affirms the opposite in a letter reading in part "Should I Be Elected President, The Provisions Of The 14th Amendment Will So, Far As Depends On Me, Be Maintained, Executed And Enforced In Perfect And Absolute Good Faith. No Rebel Debt Will Be Assumed Or Paid. No Claim For The Loss Or Emancipation Of Any Slave Will Be Allowed." Three horizontal and one vertical folds w/tiny holes at junctions. Otherwise edge wear and faint damp staining at corners and center edges. Extremely Fine. As nice an example as we've encountered in our 53 years and likely unimprovable.
